I agree with you. There is a place for using social media for marketing and SEO, but spam is spam. Smart social media marketing understands two things - at least - (1) social media shifts the power towards the consumer. Every consumer now has a megaphone that projects her voice to the four corners of the web. Good experiences are shared as well as bad. Businesses wanting to ignore this conversation, or worse stop it, are deluding themselves; (2) business has a place in the conversation: first to listen, then to learn, then to persuade.
